Capturing a perfect sunset is very satisfying experience for any photographer; however most people who try it for the first time end up dissatisfied with what they managed to get. Photographing sunsets poses a metering challenge; as you are shooting into the sun which is your primary light source and is easily many stops brighter than anything else in your composition, your camera’s meter will be tricked and will end up with an exposure which is way off… usually towards underexposure.

There is one simple technique to overcome this problem and get properly exposed sunsets every single time. The secret is to aim your camera just above the sun so that the sun is not visible through the viewfinder, press the shutter button half way to set exposure from where you are pointing it now, keep the shutter button half pressed to lock focus, recompose your shot and once you are satisfied with the composition press the shutter button all the way down to take your shot. Voila you just created a perfectly exposed sunset photograph; metering sunsets had never been so easy have they?
